Haiti - Message from Caroline Saunders - 14/01/2010 11:23

With rolling news covering the devastating earthquake that has brought Haiti to its knees, only the most heartless individual would fail to feel empathy and shock at the tragic loss of life, home and hope. Having been to Haiti in December, I cannot help but feel an even greater sadness Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere. Nearly 80 per cent of its population live on less than USD 2 a day. Only 62 per cent of its adult population are literate, 25 per cent are in any form of employment and 30 per cent have sanitation in When I visited the country in December I wanted to find out exactly how this devastating poverty affects the lives of the children of Haiti. What I saw was children struggling to survive, facing malnourishment, disease and death on a daily basis. Poor sanitation and almost no access to healthcare Those that do survive are often forced into terrible exploitation. Over 25,000 children spend their days working on the streets of Port au Prince, sometimes because they are orphans, but more often because their families rely on the income they bring home. In addition up to an estimated 300,000 children With children and adults still trapped beneath rubble and hundreds of thousands without homes, food, or their families, I can only begin to imagine how many more children will be living on the street, frightened and vulnerable. The response from the international community has been wonderful, with national governments and But when the disaster relief agencies withdraw, as they will, there will be hundreds of thousands of vulnerable children in need of shelter, support and education. This is why we are launching an appeal so that we can extend our work in Haiti to help these vulnerable children whose lives Please help. Please donate >> Thank you for your support. Caroline...

Press Release: International Community must ensure aid reaches Haitian people - 13/01/2010 15:48

In response to news of an earthquake in Haiti, which has brought much of the capital Port au Prince to collapse and is feared to have killed thousands, Caroline Saunders, Director of Jubilee Action, one of the only British charities working on the ground in Haiti, said: "It is clear "We therefore welcome news that the US, UK and Venezuela will be sending aid, however it is imperative that these countries individually and the uN as a whole recognise their responsibility in making sure this aid reaches the Haitian people. Sadly Haiti's government cannot be trusted to use money donated "We know from working with vulnerable children in Haiti, how severe the effects of poverty are on this young population, with over 25,000 under 15s working on the streets of Port au Prince every day and over 5,000 children homeless in that city alone. In light of this terrible disaster Notes to editors Caroline Saunders led a fact-finding trip to Haiti in December 2009 to assess the provision of resources for children across the country. Jubilee Action has been working with vulnerable children in Haiti since 2008. For further information and interviews please contact Frida Williams on 020 7149 3706...

Uganda's Witch Doctors - 12/01/2010 12:49

I was shocked to hear from our partners in Uganda that witch doctors persist in carrying out child sacrifice. In fact, far from being a horror story of the past, there is a roaring trade in the sale of children - whole or in pieces. The BBC have recently brought Thanks to our partners in Uganda, children in the Patongo camp are now being made aware of the risks and are learning to be careful of strangers offering them sweets, gifts or rides in their car. Even more, our partners helped to catch one of the perpetrators of this horrific Join us in protecting the children of northern Uganda from this and other injustices they face. Donate now >>...
