BRAZIL: Community Centre

Brazilian orphans find refuge at our centres
Alongside the new Music School, Jubilee Action has funded a community centre next door. The centre provides for over 100 children and works with up to 90 families in the community.

It is vital to the welfare and interests of children needing a sanctuary from a life of poverty, homelessness and crime. It gives children from the home and the surrounding neighbourhood the chance to have access to education, arts, sports and medical aid. It also works to strengthen the family unit through joint action with families and the community centre.

D. B. (13 years) “The programme represents for me a great opportunity to be a better person. I have learnt to be a better friend and also to respect the others with me every day.”

Personal Development is a Primary Goal

Special focus is given to their individual personal development, independence and social skills.

The most effective workshops over the past 12 months have been: Art and Transformation, IT and Citizenship, Judo, Popular games, Cultural workshop, and a Capoeira workshop. The centre achieved its targets of 80% attendance by students for the workshops over the year.

Additional events organised for the children included a football and basketball championship, Christmas party, holiday camp, games festival, cinema, trips to the beach, carnival week and children’s birthday parties.
