The Struggles of the VulnerableHaiti has experienced considerable unrest since President Aristide's exile in 2004. Lawlessness and violence hamper humanitarian assistance, with the most vulnerable paying the heaviest price. According to UNICEF, at least 2,000 children a year are trafficked from Haiti to the Dominican Republic, shockingly often with the support of their parents. Thousands of children are abandoned to the streets, left to fend for themselves as best they can. HIV/AIDS infection is rife, especially amongst young girls, with 17,000 children under the age of 15 struggling with HIV/AIDS. Cap-Haïtien, Haiti's second largest city, has faced huge demographic pressure due to internal immigration. Many children there are simply left abandoned in hospitals. Children with special needs are particularly vulnerable, with little specialist care offered to them. A Home and a FamilyCap-Haïtien is where Jubilee Action in partnership with Haiti Hospital Appeal have opened a children's home for orphaned and abandoned children with special needs. The House of Blessings currently supports over 60 children and infants. Whilst providing intermediate care for children, a foster family scheme will be set up so that, wherever possible, these children will be accepted into a loving family environment. Reaching the CommunityWe are running integration schemes at local schools to help teachers cater for children with special needs. We also run a community outreach programme which seeks to support up to 50 families with special needs children. This support gives these families a valuable lifeline, and reduces the likelihood that in their desperation they may resort to abandoning their children or even selling them to child traffickers. Our partners in Haiti are also be running an HIV/AIDS prevention and education programme in the local community. As this is such a huge problem in Haiti, education on this issue to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS is as vital as their valuable work supporting those who are already battling against the infection.
