MALAWI: Rescue Centre
Jubilee Action now works with children in the rural district of Blantyre in Malawi, Southern Africa. Here, 37.2% of sex workers are children below the age of 18 years, according to a recent survey by our partners, People Serving Girls at Risk. | |
We are now applying our experience in Malawi, where more than half of the population lives below the poverty line and tens of thousands die of AIDS every year. Although prostitution is illegal here, it is still a thriving industry where cases of child trafficking, abduction and pornography are common. RehabilitationWith our partners, we collaborate with the police to raid brothels and the rescued children are taken to rehabilitation centers. Here they receive counselling from dedicated Peer Educators, with the ultimate goal of rehabilitating them into mainstream society. To help prevent them returning to prostitution in the future the older children are given vocational training in marketable skills like tailoring, knitting and driving. Hope for the FutureSince the project began we have been lobbying to influence policy change and the enactment of existing laws. The Child Justice Protection Bill was recently adopted, which criminalises and provides penalties for child trafficking in Malawi. At this critical juncture, the success of the law depends heavily on the willingness of law enforcers and politicians to uphold it. We aim in the next 6 months to rescue and rehabilitate 100 child sex workers and work alongside 20 older child sex workers providing them with vocational training. Join our fight for justice...
