UGANDA: Amazing Youth Centre
![]() There are about 1.1 million Acholi people living in norhern Uganda. Throughout Idi Amin's brutal regime the suffered heavy losses and subsequently endured 20 years of war at the hands of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) and the Uganda People's Defense Force (UPDF).
The Work Of WarThe LRA terrorised civilians, burned and looted villages, and brought development to a standstill. And to worldwide condemnation, they destroyed families by abducting more than 25,000 children. These children or "child soldiers", boys and girls alike, were forced to commit terrible atrocities against civilians, or to become sex slaves, porters, spies and human shields. The LRA abducted children in the night, resulting in nightly migrations of unaccompanied children to urban centres, in search of protection. These children were known as the "night commuters". Peace in PatongoA fragile peace is now in place, but thousands have been left traumatised by the brutality of the war. More than two million people were forced to leave their homes and live in squalid camps, making them vulnerable to attack and unable to grow their own food and raise livestock. Patongo is a town in the war-ravaged Pader district in northern Uganda. It has been described as the worst part of the worst district in the most neglected part of Uganda. It is home to an internally displaced people's (IDP) camp, which at its peak, had 40,000 survivors of the war living there. Many adults have now left to find work, leaving some 10,000 people, mainly children. Youth CentreThis year Jubilee Action has committed to building a new youth centre in Patongo, which will bring education and counselling to the lives of many children who were abducted. These children face serious challenges living with the daily trauma of what they have been through. The harsh statistics support the need of the people in the Pader district:
