THAILAND: St Joseph's School

In Thailand childrens rights are very much under threat from the countries sex trade
Child trafficking happens in every region of the world, but Asian countries including Cambodia and Thailand are recognised as hubs for trafficking, particularly for sex tourism.

More than 250,000 sex tourists visit Asia each year with the intention of abusing these children who have been tricked or sold into the sex trade.

A Staggering Problem

Through our work we have discovered that there may be as many as 400,000 children aged under 16 working in the brothels, bars and clubs of Thailand. These figures show that the need to protect the children of Thailand has never been greater.

Sanctuaries for Endangered Children

Jubilee Action supports a school which is run to prevent children from being drawn into the sex industry. By educating the children about the dangers of trafficking and exploitation they stand a much better chance of not being tricked or coerced into a dangerous and soul-destroying industry. Education gives these children the opportunity to study, develop and achieve, and is vital in breaking the cycle of exploitation.

St Joseph's centres are a network of six sanctuaries on the Thai-Burma border for children under threat from sale into the sex industry.

Building Towards a Better Future

Each village centre provides education and care for between 30 and 50 young girls and boys. Many are from very poor families and pay nothing. Some bring materials and food as their contribution. The main shelter caters for up to 320 children and employs 30 teachers.

St Joseph's School in Maeramat now caters for 662 students up to the age of 15. Nearly 400 of these children board at the school. Jubilee Action’s funds help to support the continued development of the school and has also sponsored many students so they can continue their education into their high school years.
